W elcome to the second Sydney Kurt Jaggard Monetary Auction, this time at a lovely new venue, the Historic Scots Church Building (in the Chapel) located directly above the new KJC Coins Australia retail store. With just 700 lots, but well over $3,000,000 in pre-sale estimates, this Sale again is full of High Quality and Rare Coins and Banknotes, which is what Kurt Jaggard is known for and represents a fantastic opportunity for both Collectors/Investors and Dealers alike to acquire some magnificent pieces. The highlight, undoubtedly, has to be the uncirculated 1920 Sydney Gold Sovereign which is only the 4th ever example of this date to have ever become available in the marketplace worldwide. Undoubtedly, the Worlds Rarest Gold Sovereign the eventual buyer can lay claim to be one of only 4 people currently in the world capable of owning a complete Sovereign Collection including institutions!! The coin was purchased from a February 1979 Sovereign listing of “Jaggards” for $4,250, however, on April 11 it is expected to fetch as much as Half Million dollars which will be a new Australian Auction Record for any Coin or Banknote (at the time this goes to print) and would be a World Record Price for any Gold Sovereign!! . There are many other highlights, however, including one of the best Australian Pre- Decimal Pattern and Proof Sessions offered in quite some time including a 1911 and 1917 Proof Penny (never offered before), Complete 6 Coin Proof Sets of 1934 & 1938 and circa 1855 Port Phillip Pattern Shilling in Copper to name a few with the main 15 or so items expected to be knocked down for well over $400,000. The Pattern and Proof issues of Australian struck Proofs prior to 1955 are considered to be the “Crème de la Crème” with ultimate low mintages (just 2-3 in some cases) and beautiful quality, which continue to see them escalating in price each time offered. Other selected highlights include; one of the finest known 1916 Mule Halfpennies graded good VF (far superior to the one in our last Sale) and the equal finest known 1922/21 Overdate Threepence both expected to fetch around $70,000… Rare Date Sovereigns of 1926S (2) and 1923S as well as the Extremely Rare 1836 William IV Great Britain Sovereign with an extra N in Anno in the shield that is one of only a few known. For gold enthusiast the list continues with an absolutely superb 1852 Adelaide Type 2 which has not surfaced since the 1960’s in London and rates as one of the finest known as well as uncirculated examples of Australia’s very first Sovereign 1855 and an 1856 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign. There is also one of only 3 known 1893 Melbourne Half Sovereigns up for Sale of which a similar example recently sold in the Reserve Bank Sale for over $60,000!! The Australian Pre- Decimal Section is so strong that is had to be split into two sections and is highlighted by a lovely virtually complete Australian Penny Collection graded from Uncirculated to Gem or Brilliant Uncirculated (some superb and amongst the finest known), a batch of 5 x 8 pearl 1923 Halfpennies seldom ever offered, 4 x 1930 Pennies, VF 1813 Holey Dollar and sharp good VF Dump, a good range of other Pre-Decimal in all denominations from several collections as well as a comprehensive Australian and New Zealand Token collection with some 120 plus pieces on offer. The banknotes are highlighted by the possibly unique circa 1826 Sydney Bank Spanish 20 Dollar note but also include an Uncirculated One Pound Starnote and a nice selection of high grade Pre-Decimals. In World items there is a Rare German New Guinea Gold 20 Mark, Japanese Gold Manen Ex The Pittman Sale, New Zealand Fifty Pound Banknote and some very nice early English gold including a superb Elizabeth 1st Milled Half Pound. This Sale and Catalogue would not have been possible without the support of our Vendors and our dedicated KJC Team, to whom we say Thank You. We would like to wish all our bidders good luck. Kurt Jaggard Managing Director. PS. We hope to see you all soon at our new Premises, located Ground Floor, 42-44 Margaret Street, Sydney.
