The coinage of Ancient Greece is rich in artistic excellence and seeped in the mythology of the first truly "Golden Age" of Western Civilisation. The area of numismatic history is a rich picking area for Collectors who appreciate history, mythology and the long lost ability of intricate die engraving that has made Greek coinage a favorite throughout the ages. It is generally accepted that the first coins were struck in Western Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) during the latter part of the 7th Century BC. In the area around the ancient city of Ephesus, it was found the alluvial streams and rivers in the area were rich with Electrum, which is a natural occurring of silver and gold. Local traders and rulers eventually began to use pallets of electrum struck with a crude punch mark on one side as a currency. Very quickly this "coin" developed through several stages including, readily identifiable punch marks, a refining of solely silver and gold coins and a fixing of values or standards. Greek Coinage can be divided into 3 main stages, Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic. Each era has a distinctive style and reflect the changing political and social climate. At KJC Coins (Australia) we try to maintain a selection of Ancient Greek Coinage which appeal to novice Collectors as well as the serious student of this era of numismatics.
