Ancient Roman Coins

No period in history conjures up more potent images of power, tyranny, military prowess and decadence than that of the Roman Empire. From its mythological inception by Romulus and Remus to its final downfall and disintegration, the history of the Roman world is captured vividly on its coinage.

The early Republican period coins were anonymous issues being the legend ROMA and classical images. This soon developed into an intricate series of coins with specific designations on each coin as the identity of a particular official or moneyer. This Silver Denarius came to be the core denomination of the coinage and continued to be for 300 years. Gradually as the Empire began to Fragment the quality of both the design and mental content of the coinage began to suffer and in the latter centuries of the Empire it became debased and crude in style.

On Roman coins we find portraits of some of the most influential and well known figures in history. Coins bearing portraits of Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony, Nero and Augustus to name but a few, are readily available and provide both a tangible link with the past and valuable insight into the social and political upheavals of the time.
