PERTH MINT ISSUES
The Perth Mint
is Australia's specialist precious metals Mint, and is recognised
as one of the world's most innovative producers of coins in all four
precious metals - gold, silver, platinum and palladium. It is one
of the oldest Mints in the world still operating from its original
premises, right in the heart of a modern capital city.
Originally established
as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint in the last years of Queen Victoria's
reign, the Mint celebrated a century of coin and precious metals minting
in 1999. It opened in 1899, to turn the gold from Western Australia's
goldfields into Sovereigns and Half-Sovereigns.
The mint continued
as a British institution until 1970 when formal control was passed
to the Western Australian Government. Eventually it returned to the
specialist field of precious metal coin production, in 1986, with
the establishment of The Australian Precious Metals Coin Program,
which initiated the most productive and successful period in the Mint's
100-year history.
The Australian
Precious Metals Coin Program was launched in late 1986 with the First
Proof Issue of the Australian Nugget gold coins. They were followed
by Australian Koala platinum coins in 1988, Australian Kookaburra
silver coins in 1990, Australian Emu palladium coins in 1995, and
Australian Lunar gold and silver coins in 1995 and 1999 respectively.
Today the Mint's
coins are distributed around the world and are keenly sought after
for their excellence and outstanding quality. Since beginning its
Precious Metals Coin program in 1986, The Perth Mint has been one
of Australia's top export earners.
They Sydney 2000
Olympic Coin Program has added another dimension to the Mint's credentials.
In partnership with the Royal Australian Mint, it is producing and
marketing the commemorative coins and medallions for the Sydney 2000
Olympic Games. The Perth Mint manufactures precious metal coins for
several other nations and base metal medallions for a wide variety
of clients.
